What are they?
On this site they will be recognized as high security space (.5 and up) surrounded by low or null security space (.4 and down). Often times as stand alone systems, or entire clusters of systems.

Why live on or have a presence in a highsec island?
*Less or no gankers to pop miners
*War fleets may get pummeled before they ever “land” on the island.
*Lower population = better exploration opportunities.
*Small islands can act as parts of Jump freighter trade routes or solitary research systems.
*Both large and small islands share the perk of no capital presence, and hostile space surrounding it where it is logistically a pain to set up any kind of force that would take down a research POS.
*Manufacturing/research/copying slots in stations are generally more vacant.
*Cheap office rent.
*Larger islands can provide everything small corps or a few alliances would need to survive and work out of a more isolated economy.
